The Last Salute

Bombs explode on Pearl Harbor Day
The brave respond to meet the fray
From every quarter of our land
Emerge all hands to take a stand

Among the many find one man
From Central States to take command
His briefs designed for pilots bold
To stop the foe-man in the fold

This gallant chap with spirit strong
On daring missions went along
Hell-bent to get in to the fight
To smash the hostile force in sight

Life blossomed well in post war days
A strong defender of our ways
A legend in his chosen field
Respected for his steadfast shield

His stature grows as end hours near
Still vibrant strong and free from fear
Concerned attendants at his side
His last salute returned with pride

In private Sick Bay at lifes end
Navy Wings of Gold for minds mend
A trying heart a noble soul
On to heaven with wings of gold
